Police are investigating two daytime burglaries that took place this past Monday in Hillsdale, New Jersey.
Hillsdale Police detective Bob Francaviglia told Pascack Valley Community Life that both incidents may have involved the same intruder who gained access to the homes by kicking through the doors. Furthermore, authorities said that the perpetrator stole jewelry from the master bedrooms.
He added that both houses were unoccupied at the time and did not have burglar alarms. However, the thief attempted to break into a third home, but was stopped in his tracks after setting off a burglar alarm. The detective noted that his department believes the incidents are associated due to how close all of the homes are.
The authorities are urging residents to implement crime prevention techniques by putting strong locks on doors and windows, as well as keeping properties well-lit during the night to help deter burglars. "Be aware and be cognizant of everything," Francaviglia told the paper. "Everyone needs to watch everyone's home and report anything suspicious."
As noted in the perpetrator's third break-in attempt, an alarm scared them off. Burglar alarms provide a loud enough noise to scare intruders away the majority of the time, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
