Night-vision cameras to be installed in crime-infested Illinois housing development

The Meadow Green townhouse development in Round Lake Beach, Illinois, will be getting thousands of dollars worth of night-vision security cameras to prevent the above-average crime rate in the area, the Lake County News-Sun reports.

Mayor Rich Hill told the newspaper crimes involving drugs and vandalism have been a problem in the development over the past few years. Officials in Round Lake Beach are expected to approve the new camera system, which will cost the village $19,450, sometime this week.

"We believe this system will provide crime prevention as well as help us gather evidence to solve and prosecute crimes," Hill told the paper.

In addition to adding the cameras, the complex has reportedly also added more lights to make residents feel safer at night. Hill told the News-Sun the cameras should "further reduce the problems in that area."

According to the Round Lake Beach Police Department 2009 Annual Report, there were 545 adult arrests and 118 juvenile arrests made in the village in 2009. The amount of adult arrests is down from 568 in 2008, but there were juvenile arrests in 2009 were slightly higher than the year before.
