North Carolina residents see rash of burglaries

Certain communities in North Carolina have lost their sense of security after several towns have seen a recent increase in crime, specifically burglaries and larcenies, according to the Star News.

In 2009, Wilmington saw property crimes increase from 5,447 to 6,236 and such crimes in Wrightsville Beach jumped 39 percent, according to FBI data cited in the report. Additionally, property crimes in Carolina Beach saw a 34 percent increase and Bayshore Estates reported more than 54 property crimes in the past two years.

One Wilmington family recently experienced an incident where a man with a black wreath-hanger was attempting to break-in through the couple's kitchen door, says the report. As a result, the burglar never gained entrance to the home but the door's double-paned glass was destroyed and the family was understandably shaken from the incident.

Burglar alarms are one way homeowners can ensure their property is safe. The Insurance Information Institute says burglar alarms that project noise outside will most likely frighten intruders from trying to enter the home.
