The Palm Beach Police Department in Florida is planning on upgrading its video surveillance system, which will enhance its ability to protect the city.
The Palm Beach Daily News spoke to Kirk Blouin, public safety director for the police, who said the new cameras are technologically superior to the previous cameras and the footage will only be used when investigating a crime.
Residents of the city might at first view it as being intrusive, Blouin acknowledged, but he vowed that the new surveillance system will benefit the city.
Palm Beach police have eight cameras already installed throughout the city, including those that monitor bridge traffic and high-end, high-profile areas, but declined to tell the source where the upgraded cameras will be placed, for security reasons.
The money for the security system will come from the town budget and Palm Beach Police Foundation, which the Daily News reported has collected pledges of $100,000.
Palm Beach reported 22 burglaries in 2010, according to FBI statistics.
