Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, is considering new security measures after a recent gas station robbery left an attendant dead.
Following the shooting, Phillipsburg officials proposed new security measures for businesses that are open around the clock. One of the new security requirements proposed for businesses is to have working surveillance cameras installed, Lehigh Valley Live reported.
“It is extremely beneficial to our police department,” Phillipsburg Mayor Harry Wyant Jr. said to Lehigh Valley Live. “I think it’s a deterrent to have video surveillance, and I think it behooves the business owner to install these types of cameras.”
The surveillance cameras at the gas station where the shooting occurred were not working at the time of the incident; however, the owner of the property is upgrading the security system and putting in additional cameras, the source reported.
Another security measure that is being considered is having cameras installed on the streets throughout the town, according to the source. Near Phillipsburg, the Bethlehem City Council rejected similar camera requirements in 2009, arguing that it unfairly singled out convenience stores and was an unfunded government mandate.
Bethlehem reported 445 burglaries in 2010, according to FBI data.
