Police use GPS tracking to arrest suspect

GPS tracking technology is allowing one small New York police department to make arrests that surprise even the criminals themselves.

The 15-officer Blooming Grove Police Department was recently able to use the technology to arrest a suspect in a number of home burglaries, according to WCBS-TV. Officers told the station that security cameras helped them place the suspect's car at the scene of a recent home burglary.

They then got approval to place a tracker on his car, and followed him to a high-end neighborhood, where they found him allegedly stealing copper piping from an empty home. Police said that the suspect didn't predict that the local police department would use such a high-tech approach to catch him.

"They look at a small town, police department [and think] ‘We will never get caught, there's no one watching us,'" Blooming Grove police chief Carl Schupp told the station. "He was amazed. He didn't think we would go through that kind of effort to zero in on him."

While it is also used in home security applications, the use of GPS tracking by police has been the subject of much recent debate. A recent decision by a federal appeals court has said that officers do not need a warrant to use GPS tracking on a suspect's vehicle.ADNFCR-3514-ID-19939390-ADNFCR
