Safeguard homes for the holidays

The holidays are a time for families to enjoy each other's company, but burglars are also trying to enjoy this time of year by breaking into unsuspecting households and stealing presents.

Newton, California, police chief Randy Richardson has provided tips for people to follow in hopes of deterring thieves from their homes. He suggested to securely lock all the windows and doors. A home that looks like it is occupied even when it is not may keep intruders at bay, says the police chief. An efficient way to make the home look like people are home is to leave the lights on by timers.

Burglaries tend to increase in neighborhoods during the holidays. "We do see an increase in burglaries in December," Richardson told The West Side Index & Gustine Press-Standard.

Another recommendation for homeowners going away for an extended period of time is to stop the mail and newspaper delivery, as Richardson noted that a build-up of papers on one's front step may indicate to a criminal that people are away.

Some form of home security systems are encouraged by authorities throughout the country, as the Orlando Police Department recommends residents using at least an alarm system because it will decrease the risk of a home burglary.
