A New Jersey man was caught red-handed recently trying to rob a local scrap metal recycling business.
The burglary occurred at 7:45 p.m. on February 20. Police were summoned to the scene after the suspect, Ireneusz Gielarowiec, tripped the burglar alarm at Allied Waste. Unable to escape once police arrived, Gielarowiec hid near the back of the facility until, using a K-9 unit, authorities tracked him down and arrested him.
Security camera footage reviewed later by police confirmed that Gielarowiec was the man who broke into the facility, according to local news source The Record. He is the second alleged burglar to attempt to rob the scrap metal recycling operation in as many years, manager Annette Macchiarelli told the news source.
Scrap metal recycling can be a lucrative business. Copper wiring is especially valuable, selling for as much as $3.36 per pound, according to goldenrecycling.org.
