A man accused of stealing a UPS package off the front porch of a Bay Area home was identified by police thanks to the victim's home surveillance system. According to San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO, the package-thief was caught casing the home with a friend and nabbing the package off the porch in broad daylight.
Police told the source that package thieves follow delivery trucks and make their move just as the driver leaves the area, hoping to take advantage of people having items delivered while they are away at work during the day. More often than not, package thieves are looking for electronics and other high-end merchandise, and are difficult to catch.
"Without the homeowner having had the video surveillance equipment, the suspect more than likely would've gotten away with this," Ted Horlbeck, Alameda Police Department lieutenant, told KGO.
Home surveillance systems are becoming increasingly popular in the Bay Area, according to Bay Area NBC affiliate KNTV. Residents are purchasing security cameras for added surveillance and peace of mind as the number of home break-ins in the area increases.
