Security cameras becoming more common for homeowners in Dallas

Burglaries are a year-long issue in communities throughout the country. But when the holidays come, so does increased risk for a home burglary.

Homeowners in the Dallas area are favoring the use of security cameras, as they hope it will help identity criminals if they do try to kick down the door or steal a package from the front step. The Dallas Morning News reported one incident in which packages containing several items were stolen right from a resident's steps.

However, the homeowners who had their packages stolen used their security cameras to capture the thief on video, which they then posted on You Tube, says the paper. The use of security cameras may become more widespread in the area.

Dallas County prosecutor Marc Moffitt told the paper he recently used homes' video surveillance equipment to prosecute criminals connected to a burglar and murder investigation. He added that the advancements in technology and video quality will make home security cameras "more common."

Burglaries are common in Dallas, as the FBI says that there were 19,428 incidents in 2009, more than any other city in the state except Houston.
