Security cameras could soon watch over America's oldest trees

Following the collapse of one of the world's oldest cypress tree, officials in Seminole County, Florida,  are considering installing security cameras and fences to help protect another ancient conifer.

The Senator, a 3,500-year-old cypress located at Big Tree Park in Florida, collapsed on January 16 as the result of a fire. While investigators are still uncertain how the fire began, arson has been ruled out as a cause.

Now, park and county officials want to encircle the remaining stump with a decorative fence, and set up additional security measures across the park. This would include two or three security cameras near the site of The Senator's stump, and near another cypress, the 2,000-year-old Lady Liberty tree, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

Officials have also proposed installing a six-foot chain link fence around the perimeter of the park. The security cameras and the fencing would cost roughly $63,000, according to the Sentinel.

Another ancient cypress is alive and well and living in Iran. The 4,000-year-old Sarv-e-Abarkooh, also known as the Zoroastrian Sarv, carries strong religious connotations for many Iranians, according to Environmental Graffiti.
