Security expert describes low-cost deterrents

A home security expert in Gwinnett, Georgia, says that while home security systems are important, many homeowners also overlook some simple steps they can take to protect their homes.

Jordan Frankel, an official with a Georgia-based home security firm, told the Gwinnett Daily Post that the floundering economy has fueled a rise in robberies.

"The economy is so bad, the typical home-invader is now stealing items and cash to put food on their own table," Frankel told the paper. "This is not something our government and law enforcement typically wants to report, because it's such a violent crime. With victims, there is such a psychological, brutal trail left behind."

In addition to installing home alarm systems, Frankel says that residents can leave a large pair of men's boots outside the front door to suggest that someone is home, and install motion-activated lighting to startle a potential intruder who might approach the home.

But despite perceptions of worsening crime, statistics show that crime in the local Gwinnett area is actually decreasing. Recent FBI statistics showed that the city actually experienced a drop in crime from 2008 to 2009.
