Solid door and locks the first step against burglary

Workers at a local hardware store in Tennessee say they've seen a significant increase in the number of families looking to upgrade their home security.

WLVT-TV reports that many consumers have been out buying new locks or re-keying their homes, while others have been purchasing stronger doors.

"If someone was gonna try to kick it in it's gonna be a lot harder than an interior door which is hollow core. Or even a steel door is gonna be a little bit stronger because you're also gonna have steel framing," Lowe's foreman Charlie Rackette told the station.

Rackette added that the technology in home security systems has improved dramatically over the past few years, and that modern security cameras come in a variety of price ranges.

However, many burglaries are caused by simple carelessness, like leaving a window open that could make it easy for a burglar to enter the home. Past statistics from the FBI say that as many as two-thirds of burglars use an open window or unlocked door to enter a home.
