Recent FBI data showed the number of property crimes in South Carolina has taken a slight dip in the past year, but the state still remains in second place nationally, behind only Washington, D.C.
South Carolina ranked worse than the national average in every property crime category, according to the FBI’s 2010 crime statistics, placing second in the rate of larceny-theft and ninth in burglary and motor vehicle theft. Property crimes increased in several South Carolina areas, including Greenville, Anderson and Pickens counties.
“I think the recession is responsible for some of it,” Greenville Sheriff Steve Loftis told the Greenville News. Loftis’ county experienced a 7.6 percent increase in crime.
Authorities are trying to communicate with each other better in order to reduce crime, according to the news article.
The nation’s property crime rate fell 3.3 percent in 2010, according to the FBI. The burglary rate fell 2.5 percent and the larceny-theft rate fell 2.4 percent.
