Surveillance video reveals culprit in home invasions

Security cameras played a significant role in police arresting a suspect who was identified as being tied to a string of home robberies that occurred within the past 60 days in Columbia, Missouri.

James Woods was arrested by authorities on January 23 after surveillance video from a local business caught his vehicle following one of his victims. The same vehicle was later identified in the parking lot of Stephens Lake Park.

After officers identified the vehicle, they waited for the suspect to approach and then arrested him. Authorities allege that Woods did not resist arrest and was later charged with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action.

Woods' wife was contacted by police after the arrest and admitted her husband had given her a necklace as a gift on January 20 that was identified as stolen property from one of the victim's homes.

Surveillance cameras also proved to be useful tools at the University of Missouri, which is roughly three miles south of Stephens Lake Park. The university recently installed surveillance cameras on its campus, which enabled officials to identify an arsonist involved in setting fires in one of the campus libraries.
