Survey: Happy teenagers more likely to avoid crime

A recent study may provide some relief for those worried about neighborhood and home security.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of California, Davis, revealed that happier teenagers are less likely to commit a crime.

The researchers analyzed the data of nearly 15,000 students between grades 7 and 9 to conduct their report. Of these students, 29 percent admitted to have committed one criminal offense, while 18 percent claimed they had used at least one illegal drug. However, when the researchers looked at data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, they discovered that teenagers who were happier were less likely to commit crimes or use drugs.

The report also showed that teens suffering from even minor depression were more likely to engage in illegal activity.

The researchers concluded that the benefits of being happy, such connecting with others, feeling good about oneself and having good social skills, can help children make decisions that are "informed by positive emotions."

The researchers hope to influence more teens with their report, while continuing to lower the nation's crime rate.
