The family of a slain security guard in southeastern New Mexico may receive justice after police announced February 2 that they have apprehended a suspect.
Twenty-four-year-old Michael Evans was murdered while on duty guarding the Yates Petroleum building in Artesia, New Mexico, on January 29. He telephoned 911 to report a suspicious person walking through a nearby alley. Evans described the man as tall and skinny, wearing black gloves and a blue bandana over his face. Moments later, his phone went dead, according to local CBS affiliate KRQE.
Police recovered security camera footage from the scene, which captured the event, according to the source. After days of investigation, police announced that they may have caught a break in the case. While executing a search warrant in an unrelated case, officers found clothing and a silver gun that match those of the suspect in the video surveillance tapes. Police apprehended the suspect, Bobby Smith, and are holding him on the charge of felony firearm possession while they continue their investigation.
Gunfire was also involved in another recent incident in New Mexico. On January 21, a Silver City resident was awoken by a home intruder and the two exchanged shots, according to local news source the Grant County Beat.
