Being home during the holidays is generally meant for family members to enjoy each other's company, but burglars also want to get it on the festivities, specifically the part where gifts are opened. To help people safely enjoy their presents, security experts provided CBS 2 in New York with some safety tips for homeowners.
Security expert David Bohem recommends thoroughly checking all the doors and locks periodically to ensure they are sturdy and working sufficiently. Another tip is to always request a signature when a package is delivered to the door so they won't be left on the doorstep. He also warns homeowners to not keep anything that looks valuable under the Christmas tree because a thief may try to test his luck.
Although home security systems are an effective way to keep burglars away, one security system expert urges people to keep them on all the time rather than just at night. Ethan Blumenfeld, of Advanced Security Systems, told the station, "You are paying for it. It is really a premium service and it is another way to protect yourself."
Police departments around the country also encourage homeowners to invest in home security systems, as the Vermilion Parish Sheriff in Louisiana told the Vermilion Today paper that residents should consider a home security or alarm system.
