Thieves targeting security cameras for their own use

A new trend seems to be sweeping the California criminal community - thieves and drug dealers have been stealing security cameras from local hospitals and businesses and using them to beef up their own home security.

The recent theft of a hospital security camera in Bakersfield, California, has provided local police with their first glimpse of one of the criminals purloining the surveillance equipment. The man, so far unidentified, was seen smirking into the camera as he dismantled it, according to a Huffington Post article.

"Usually they're going for the infrared equipment, but this guy just went for the camera," area detective Scott Miller told the Huffington Post. "We're getting hit with a bunch of these thefts lately ... They're likely using them to fortify their own homes for surveillance."

Despite the recent rash of camera thefts, property crime in California has dropped more than 50 percent over the last three decades, according to the California Department of Justice.
