Topeka, Kansas home invasion numbers double

Home invasions in Topeka, Kansas, have nearly doubled over the past year. According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, the crimes are being committed by children as young as 12 and 13.

The Topeka Police Department revealed crime statistics in its third quarter crime strategy meeting recently, the Capital-Journal reported. Statistics showed property crimes and violent crimes are both higher than they were at the same point last year.

At the third quarter crime strategy meeting, Police Chief Ron Miller said he is concerned about the number of home invasions that have occurred, according to the Capital-Journal. “It’s a group of young people running together committing these crimes,” Miller said of the home invasions. “Crime is an issue in the community. Public safety needs to be a priority for all of us.”

Miller believes the home invasions are a direct reflection of a gang problem in the area, which he alleged isn’t the traditional gang scenario, according to the news source. Instead, he claimed rival gangs band together to commit these crimes.

Topeka’s overall property crimes, including burglary, automobile theft, shoplifting and arson were up 3.18 percent from the same time last year, according to the FBI’s 2010 crime statistics. The U.S. Census Bureau reported Topeka’s population grew to more than 127,000 residents in 2010.
