Violent crime down in Fresno, California

Violent crimes in Fresno, California, have decreased significantly while property crimes are on the rise, according to recent statistics released by the Fresno police.

Violent crimes, including homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults, are down nearly 6 percent compared to last year, while property crimes, including auto theft, have risen 6.5 percent.

"We know we're going in the right direction,” Police Chief Jerry Dyer told KPGE News, a CBS affiliate in Fresno. “It's just gonna take us a while to get where we used to be."

Fresno police are working on arresting criminals who are involved in more serious crimes as opposed to minor offenses, which Dyer said the city no longer has the capacity to handle.

"It used to be the philosophy of law enforcement that you would arrest everyone that's involved in a crime and put them in jail,” he said to KPGE. “Unfortunately, we don't have a criminal justice system that will support that any longer."
