Virginia city using new methods for crime reporting

According to a recent report from the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily, residents of James City County, Virginia, have been encouraged to take advantage of the region's new method for crime reporting to enhance local neighborhood and home security.

The James City County Police Department has launched a new crime-reporting system that allows residents to anonymously email or text the branch about suspicious or illegal activity. The police department relayed in a press release that any information reported to it through the new system will be treated confidentially, meaning citizens do not have to fear any potential retribution or repercussions.

"The system will provide reassurance to individuals familiar with texting and email while allowing the police department to gain valuable tips and intelligence regarding crime that may be occurring in the County," the police department said in the press release.

Police officials stressed, however, that citizens should not use the new system to report crimes in progress, but rather, call 911 for any immediate emergencies.

The new system does not cost the police department any additional funds to operate, which may prove effective in its fight to reduce the region's crime and restore neighborhood peace.
