Burglaries tend to increase during this time of year, as intruders try to take advantage of empty homes that may be vulnerable. The Memphis Police Department has issued a report of burglary-prevention tips that homeowners can put to use all year round.
The basic home safety tips include making the residence look as though it is occupied even when it is not. Leaving the indoor and outdoor lights on timers so they turn on and off periodically may make it more difficult for intruders to take the risk. People should also routinely lock all doors and windows, says the report.
If plans include being away from home for an extended period of time, officials say residents should be sure to make arrangements with a trusted neighbor to come check the property at least once a day. Additionally, the report recommends having a neighbor bring in the mail or let the post office know that all mail deliveries need to be stopped for the time being.
The department also recommends investing in home alarm systems, because they feel, "An alarm system is excellent for home security." The Orlando Police Department also encourages residences to use home alarm systems because they say intruders generally avoid homes with one.
