- Police Hope to Curb Holiday Break-ins
December 18, 2006 (Oxford, OH) – Police hope to curb holiday break-ins The Oxford Police Department is urging residents to take proper precautions when leaving their homes this holiday season.
Police said they received five burglary reports during the Thanksgiving holiday, an increase over the previous year. To curb the recent trend, Oxford police Sgt. Jim Squance advised residents to take proper measures when leaving home for an extended period.
"We kind of had a high number of burglaries for a short (Thanksgiving) holiday," Squance said. "... Double check locks, and make sure potential access points are secure."
The OPD's Vacant House Check Program is one way to fight against winter holiday break-ins. Police visit vacant homes daily searching for signs of criminal activity or anything out of the ordinary, Squance said.
To register for the program, residents can visit the police station or log onto the OPD's Web page at the city of Oxford's Web site: www.cityofoxford.org.
Police also advise residents to remove vehicles from city streets if leaving town for a number of days or weeks. Vehicles parked on designated snow routes will be towed when there is three or more inches of snow or during a snow emergency.
There also is a 72-hour ordinance, which permits the city to tow vehicles parked on streets for 72-consecutive hours without moving them.
"It is important to get the cars off the street because if we have a snow storm, we need to get the cars off the street to plow the snow routes," Squance said.
Street signs label the snow routes. Information also can be found at the city's Web site.
