- 3 arrested in Mt. Vernon home invasion
July 19, 2007 (Mt. Vernon, NY) – Two city teenagers and a young man have been arrested in connection with a June 11 home invasion in which police said they choked a woman, beat her son and returned later to steal their 2005 Toyota Rav 4.
Ricardo Brown, 18, of 423 Cedar Ave.; Adrian Bradshaw, 16, of 129 Fourth Ave.; and a 15-year-old boy whose name was not released were charged with first-degree burglary, a felony.
"It is frightening the brazenness of this group of young men," said Commissioner David Chong of the Mount Vernon police. "Hopefully this will send a clear message to those who would engage in this type of activity, that you will be eventually apprehended and face serious consequences."
All three suspects made statements incriminating themselves in the home invasion, said Detective Lt. Edward Adinaro of the Mount Vernon police.
Chong said police are investigating whether the invasion is linked to other similar incidents in the city.
At 7:08 p.m. June 11, a 53-year-old woman was cleaning out her fish tank in her East Fifth Street home when someone grabbed her around her neck and started choking her before dragging her into another room, Adinaro said. Other robbers went upstairs where her 15-year-old son was sleeping, dragged him out of bed, put him in a head-lock and punched him several times in the head, police said.
The intruders ransacked the house, taking two cell phones and the car keys before running away. Brown and the 15-year-old returned later with the stolen keys and took the woman's SUV, police said.
Police spotted the SUV early June 12 and chased it, but the vehicle crashed on Beach Street, and the occupants jumped out and escaped.
Investigators said help from community residents led detectives to the three suspects. Their admissions solidified the case, police said.
Brown is serving three years' probation after being sentenced June 26 for an unrelated assault with intent to cause physical injury.
Brown was arrested in the invasion Tuesday afternoon at police headquarters. Bradshaw was arrested July 5, and the 15-year-old was arrested July 6, but police did not report the two arrests until yesterday. Chong said police withheld the information because they were still trying to find the third suspect.
"We were afraid he would be in the wind," Chong said.
