August 09, 2007 (Atlanta, GA) – A Cobb County man was shot and killed in an apparent home invasion robbery attempt at a duplex in the heart of the Atlanta University Center Wednesday night.
The victim, 21, was not a college student, and the shooting did not take place on campus property, Atlanta police said. Police identified him Thursday morning as Jameson Bush of Marietta.
The shooting occurred at a duplex in the 800 block of Beckwith Street near the Atlanta University Center, police said.
Two people were in a room of the eight-bedroom property, when two masked men and with guns drawn asked them to lay on the floor.
The robbers demanded money and ordered the two people not to move, said Detective J. Dalton.
The victim was shot several times when he apparently moved, Dalton said. His name was not released, but police said he was visiting a friend when he was shot.
Authorities are looking for two masked and armed men who were last seen going toward Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on foot, said Atlanta police Officer James Polite. As of 9:45 a.m. Thursday, they were still at large.
The property is one of many rental properties with signs outside soliciting students as classes get underway at the University Center. The center is a consortium of historically black colleges and universities, including Morehouse and Spelman colleges.
The shooting took place across the street from the Robert W. Woodruff Library that many of the schools share.
Clark Atlanta University spokesman Debra Miller said the school went into its "Safety First" operation soon after the shootings, increasing the number of public safety officers patrolling the area and establishing secured areas on campus for students to gather. The school is in the midst of its registration period.
Late Wednesday night, police were still waiting to pull out the body from inside the house.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Atlanta police's tip hotline at 404-577-8477.
