  • 1 killed, 1 hurt in apparent break-in robbery near Dover

August 20, 2007 (Dover, DE) – One man was shot to death Saturday and another injured in what police said reportedly began as a home-invasion robbery near Dover.

Twenty-three-year-old Jerome M. Hill - shot once in the head - was found dead in his mobile home at Dover Air Park about 2:15 a.m., said Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. John W. Barnett Jr.

The injured man, a 24-year-old Dover resident whose name was being withheld, was treated and released from Kent General Hospital in Dover, Barnett said.

Barnett said police cannot confirm whether the injured man lived with Hill or at another address in the city.

No yellow crime scene tape cordoned Hill's home later Saturday in the modest trailer park adjoining military housing across Del. 1 from Dover Air Force Base.

No one answered the door at Hill's home or at others nearby in the small trailer park, where lots are rented and tenants own their homes.

Police disclosed no theories about why Hill's home in the 100 block of Carpenter St. would have become the target of a home invasion.

"No," Barnett said late Saturday night, "we don't have a motive yet."

And police have almost no information about the pre-dawn crime or those who may have committed it -- even how many people were involved.

Barnett on Saturday released sketchy information that the injured man provided investigators.

"This victim stated that three to four suspects -- of unknown race, age and gender -- entered the home and demanded his valuables," he said.

No information was available Saturday about what might have sparked the shooting or how many of the alleged intruders might have been armed.

Barnett said Hill was shot and the other man "was struck in the face with what appeared to be a revolver and shot in the right thigh."

The intruders then fled, but police did not have any information about whether they ran away or had a getaway vehicle, or which direction they went.

"It's unknown if any property was taken," he added.

Hill was pronounced dead at the scene, Barnett said. No information was available about the type of gun or guns used in the incident or whether any weapon or weapons were recovered at the scene. He said police cannot say whether the two men are believed to have been shot by the same person.

Barnett said he had no information to release about why so few details of the crime leading to the homicide have come to light.

More information will be released when it becomes available, he said.

"That's all we have for now," Barnett said shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, "We're not going to have any additional to release tonight."

The investigation is continuing, he said, and police ask anyone with information about the crime to call the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit at (302) 739-5939, Troop 3 near Camden at (302) 697-4456 or Crimestoppers at (800) TIP-3333.
