  • Home invasion may be linked to murder-for-hire plot

September 06, 2007 (Salt Lake City, UT) – An apparent home invasion robbery in Salt Lake City last month could have actually been part of a murder-for-hire plot.

On Tuesday, Salt Lake City police arrested Ashley Arellano-Lopez, 23, for investigation of attempted aggravated murder. Arellano arranged a contract to murder her husband, according to jail records.

On Aug. 29, police were investigating an apparent home invasion near 1600 North and 1900 West. A woman called 911 about 1:45 a.m. and whispered to the dispatcher that someone was in her home and shots were fired. The woman's husband later told police he was in his basement when he heard a crash from upstairs. When he went to investigate he found several people in his living room and ran out the backdoor as shots were fired.

The Deseret Morning News has learned the female caller was Arellano.

The jail report said an attempt was made to take her husband's life on Aug. 29 at his house.

Benito Israel Chacon, 22, also was arrested this week and booked for investigation of attempted aggravated murder. Jail documents say he tried to murder someone.

Both suspects were being held Thursday in the Salt Lake County Jail on $500,000 bail.
