  • Woman Stabbed During Break-in

January 31, 2006 (Columbia, TN) – A Columbia woman was treated at Maury Regional Hospital for a knife wound in an attack at a trailer park on Cherokee Drive after a break-in and theft, according to Columbia police reports.

A report written by Officer Nicholas Moss said Herbert J. Redding and his friend Melissa Bearden returned home Sunday just after 11 p.m. to find his back door pried open and hand tools missing.

Moss's report said when the two went outside, they saw three men and asked them what had happened.

The report said one of the men hit Redding in the face and another man struck him in the head, knocking his glasses to the ground. Bearden was then attacked with a knife, suffering a wound to her right hand.

In his report, Moss said Bearden identified Kenneth Gilcrest, 32, in a line-up as the attacker.

Gilcrest was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. He was released from custody on $5,000 bond.
