  • Home invasion leaves man wounded

September 25, 2007 (Mobile, AL) – A west Mobile man was shot in the chest and leg about 4 a.m. Monday during a home invasion on Christopher Drive near Hillcrest and Cottage Hill roads, authorities said.

Nancy Johnson, a Mobile police spokeswoman, identified the victim as Jamie Parker.

Parker was taken to University of South Alabama Medical Center, according to the victim's stepson, who didn't want to be identified.

Parker was undergoing surgery Monday afternoon, and his condition was not immediately available.

Johnson said Mobile police arrested Wytiki Rayshun Moffett, 31, of a Windsor Drive address, shortly after the home invasion.

She said a second suspect, Marshall Smith, 21, of a Kellogg Street address, was arrested Monday afternoon.

Both men were taken to Mobile County Metro Jail, where they were being held without bail as of Monday night. They were charged with attempted murder and first-degree burglary, according to the jail log.

According to Johnson, Moffett and Parker are acquaintances.

"Police believe that this was not a random crime," she said.

The shooting occurred at a home in the 6300 block of Christopher Drive. Jo Whitaker said Monday that Parker and his family have been living next door to her for about two years.

Whitaker said she has been living there for 30 years and she could not recall a similar shooting in the normally peaceful neighborhood.

"It's never happened, and probably never will again, because it's nice and quiet," the 62-year-old woman said. "I know all my neighbors; I know everybody that lives here.

"I've had no problems whatsoever. The people next door (the Parkers) are just as nice as they could possibly be."

Whitaker said that when she sees Parker or a member of his family, they speak and wave.

She said the break-in and shooting are "just one of those weird 2007 epidemics. It could happen to anybody."

Whitaker said she still feels safe in her neighborhood.

"It doesn't scare me. It doesn't scare me at all," she said.
