- Man shot during burglary
September 27, 2007 (Huelo, HI) – An intruder was hospitalized after being shot during a burglary Monday night at a Huelo home, police said.
A resident also was injured and hospitalized after confronting and being assaulted by the burglar, police said.
Patrol officers responded to the reported gunshot at 8:45 p.m. Monday at the residence on Door of Faith Road.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that a 29-year-old man and two 17-year-old boys, all Huelo residents, entered the home to steal items. A 43-year-old man occupying the home confronted the three with a firearm, police said.
At least one gunshot was fired, hitting the 29-year-old man in his abdominal area, police said. Despite being shot, the man used an object that he found in the house to assault the resident, police said. All three intruders fled.
Later, a man suffering from a gunshot to his abdominal area was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room for treatment, police said. The man was undergoing surgery Tuesday, police said. He was listed in critical condition but was expected to recover from his injuries.
The resident who was assaulted was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was treated for severe and multiple facial fractures, police said. He was in satisfactory condition and scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday.
Police located and arrested the two 17-year-old boys, who were later released to their parents.
Huelo resident Lucienne de Naie said the remote area has experienced an increase in burglaries, although the numbers seemed to have declined recently.
“There have been a lot of burglaries and even some break-ins when people were home,” she said.
For a while, she said some residents had hired private security guards after being victimized by burglars.
