Investing in a home security system is one of the most important things you can do for your home and family. A home invasion happens every 18 seconds in the United States, which amounts to a whopping 4,800 break-ins per day.
But burglars are much less likely to break into a home with a security system. One study conducted by the University of Carolina states that 60 percent of convicted burglars were influenced by the presence of a home security system, saying that it more often than not swayed their decision to break in.
Now, your next question may be, “How much do security systems cost?” Contrary to popular belief, security systems don’t have to empty your wallet — many are very affordable. This article seeks to cover the least expensive to the most expensive when it comes to security systems, as well as describe what you get with each monthly plan.
Monitored Security Systems: A Cost Breakdown
When shopping around for a security system, you should be looking for the best product at the best price, just like anything else you buy. Looking for anything more or less is a recipe for disaster. Also, remember to look for monitored home security systems — not just security cameras or “security camera packages.”
When shopping around for a security system, you should be looking for the best product at the best price.
ADT offers monitored home security for $36.99 – $52.99 per month. The lowest price is called the “essential” package, and includes features such as 3 door/window sensors, sirens, motion sensors, and yard signs. The lowest price option does not include two-way voice, cellular alarm monitoring, and something the company calls “ADT Pulse,” which is mobile device remote access to security cameras. The installation cost is extra. As of right now, the cost of installation with security cameras is $100 with a new 36-month contract. Termination fees apply.
Vivint Smart Home
Vivint is available for as low as $9.17 per month, but that price point comes with a bit of fine print — it requires a 60-month contract commitment, and it’s just the “starter” package. At this price point you get window/door sensors, motion detector, and a central control panel. Monitored home security with Vivint is extra, with packages costing between $39.99 to $49.99 per month. The equipment is an extra cost, but you get to choose how much to spend and what to buy.
SimpliSafe takes a different approach — they offer monitored home security by equipment cost and a flat monthly fee of $14.99 per month. Extra features such as fire and water protection are extra. The equipment costs can add up, though. The “Ultimate” equipment package costs about $665, the “Master” package costs about $585, and the “Perimeter Defense” package costs $535. The cheapest package costs $230, but only includes 5 pieces.
We offer three monitored security packages. Our most affordable option, the Copper package, costs $19.99 per month (with no strings attached!) and includes all of the following:
- Control panel
- 3 door/window sensors
- Motion detector
- Yard sign
- 4 door/window stickers
Our Platinum package costs $42.99 per month and includes all of the features just listed and more. To see a full list of plans and features, click here. You can also check out all of our premium equipment here.
