Brinks Home Security is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia and is a leading provider of home security; as well as airport security, armored car transport and global logistics.
The home security division is just one of the many divisions in the parent company The Brinks Company. Overall, the company’s primary customers are retailers, banks and government agencies, and they have offices in 100 countries around the world. The parent company employs nearly 60,000 people.
Brinks is an old company and the Brinks customer service representatives are going to have a lot of experience. It was founded in 1859. As Brinks entered the new millennium in 2000, the company changed hands through a series of several financial transactions.
In 2002, a company called Pittston, a natural resource company, sold off the majority of its timber, coal and natural gas resources. That left the cash needed to buy Brinks and in 2003, on Brinks 144th birthday, Pittson officially changed its name to The Brinks Company. Brinks’ global arm, BAX Global, was sold to the German railway company Deutsche Bahn.
At the time, Brinks Home Security was spun off into its own standalone company, but one year later in 2009, Tyco International acquired the security firm. Tyco international also owned ADT so the two giants in home security—Brinks and ADT—were merged under the Tyco umbrella.
Tyco International actually operates as three separate companies. All three are independent of the others and are all publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
Brinks Home Security falls under one of the companies, called ADT North America. The company provides products and services for the residential security business, and is North America’s leading provider of security for homes and small businesses.
Tyco’s other two companies involve a flow control products and services business and a commercial fire and security business.
Tyco’s Board of Directors said this:
Over the last four years, we have strengthened our competitive position in our core security, fire and flow control businesses by driving organic growth, investing in R&D and technology, increasing efficiency and productivity and making strategic acquisitions. Today, each business is in a strong financial position and has exceptional brands, highly skilled employees and talented, experienced leadership.
ADT North America is the leading provider of security and fire alarm systems, serving more than 6 million homes and businesses. The company is a one-stop shop. They provide the end-to-end security systems:
- provide security monitoring services
The business employs over 16,000 people and has revenues exceeding $3 billion.
ADT also has an extensive senior and health monitoring market that provides medical alert equipment and services, as well as other health and video monitoring capabilities.
Although based in North America, ADT serves customers in 35 countries. It is the largest security company in the United States and in Canada. They serve over 8 million customers. ADT holds at least 25 percent of the residential home security market share.
Five years after Tyco created ADT North American in 2011, the company was acquired in 2016 by Apollo Global Management in a $7 billion leveraged buyout. Apollo is an equity firm that specializes in buying distressed security companies. ADT’s corporate offices are in Boca Raton, Florida.
We hope you’ve enjoyed our history of the Brinks company.
