With the growing uncertainty in the world today, one thing everybody wants to be sure of is the safety of their home and family. The wide array of security companies available can make it difficult to know which one to choose. When companies change their name or are gobbled up by larger corporations it can get even more confusing.
One such company is — or rather was — Brinks Home Security. First, Brinks was bought by Broadview Security. Then they were sucked into the conglomerate that is ADT Alarm Systems. ADT is undoubtedly the largest home security provider in North America. They have offices across the United States and Canada. They employ a large dealer network and a massive advertising campaign.
However, as with many things in life, bigger is not always better.
ADT Costs and Value
As with any home security system, there are three key elements involved in the value and cost of a system.
- Setup — How much does the company charge to install and activate their system?
- Equipment — What will the equipment cost up front and what is the repair policy?
- Monthly Fees — How much does the company charge for monitoring their system?
To that end, this is how “Brinks” (ADT) measures up.
Brinks (ADT) Setup Costs
ADT offers a number of different plans “setup/installation” fees ranging from $99 to $499 according to SecuritySystems.net. On their website, ADT only lists the cost of those fees for its cheapest package and requires customers to call to find out about the more expensive ones. The ADT website also fails to explain exactly what those costs cover other than to say that the installation is quick, easy, and done by professionals.
Brinks (ADT) Equipment Costs
Unlike several of their smaller competitors, ADT does not offer its customers free equipment. Furthermore, repairs of the equipment are the financial responsibility of the customer.
All the packages offered include simple equipment such as:
- A combination of 3 Door and/or Window Sensors
- 1 Pet-Friendly Motion Sensor
- Wireless Keypad
- Control Panel
- 1 ADT Yard Sign
- 1 Window Decal
- Phone Landline or approved Internet connection
Brinks (ADT) Monthly Service Costs
With some of the highest monthly fees in the industry, customers should be able to be confident that they are also getting the highest level of service possible. However, based on reviews like the one below it seems that this is not necessarily true.
“The only downside to ADT is I have the same service that I started with when I signed up in 2004 but the monthly charge has increased significantly.” Susan from Battle Creek, MI on ConsumerReports.org
These are not the words that inspire confidence in a company. Chances are this person would not recommend Brinks (ADT) to their friends, family, or neighbors. In fact, they would likely warn those people away from such shoddy treatment.
Wrapping It Up
Protecting one’s home and family is important. Customers should be able to get that security at a reasonable cost. While Brinks (Broadview) (ADT) may not be the best choice for many, it is an option. Luckily, there are other — more affordable — options available on the market today.
