It may seem like a good home security system is hard to find. In fact, many people would prefer to go with names they already know, love, and trust – like GE. Once upon a time, GE was a leader in the home security systems industry. The story today, though, is a different one indeed.
GE Exits Home Security Business
GE Home Security Systems really do exist. Many of them were quite popular and used to this day in homes across the country. In fact, it was once possible to find them at many big-name retailers including places you already know and shop, like:
- Home Depot
- Many Home Security Service Providers
The caveat in all this is that GE once made and sold home security systems, but no more. You may be able to find them on the market today. However, according to GE Reports, the organization sold its security business in 2010 and no longer manufactures or sells home security systems.
That means if you have someone calling your home or going door to door offering to sell you new and innovative GE home security systems and products, you are likely the target of a hoax or scam. In fact, the report from GE has some strong words, stating:
“It has come to GE’s attention that there have been telemarketing calls and door-to-door sales people saying they work for GE Security and attempting to sell home security systems. This is a scam. These people do not work for GE or UTCFSA.”
UTCFSA (UTC Fire & Security Americas Corporation, Inc.) is the company the purchased GE’s security business in 2010. In fact, UTCFSA had to request a summary judgment in 2016 related to the practices of unauthorized telemarketers attempting to sell their products – illegally – when they were named as defendants in a class action suit against the company for illegal telemarketing actions.
Alternatives to GE Home Security Systems
According to GE, there are currently no authorized dealers of GE branded home security equipment or services in the U.S. This means that purchasing these products places you at risk of buying falsely labeled products or products that have been used, returned, refurbished, etc.
Fortunately, there are affordable home security products on the market today that present attractive alternatives to what GE had to offer – more importantly, these products have the modern bells and whistles you’re looking for that likely were not available in 2010.
Alternatives do exist and you’re likely to find that they are superior, because of constantly improving technology, to the ones GE manufactured nearly a decade ago. In fact, today’s home security systems offer far more features, greater versatility, and infinitely more opportunities for customization, automation, and integration than those of 2010.
