When you’re concerned about home security, it’s more than just material things you’re securing – it’s your family, heirlooms, and your personal well-being. What type of home security system you get will depend on your own concerns in regard to your home, which can range from fire, burglary, floods to some other hazard.

In the U.S. there are around 36 million security systems, with about half of those in residential homes. Many insurance companies will offer large discounts if your home is secured by a home security system (even one monitored by you!) and even more discounts if they’re monitored by a trusted third-party provider.

SOS Security Positives

One thing that stands out with SOS Home Systems is their pricing transparency. You won’t be unclear about what you’re paying with them. Not that their prices are particularly lower than any other company, but it’s just nice to know exactly what you’re getting into.

They also include home automation features in their technology with the Honeywell Total Control 2.0 app so that you can control and monitor your security features from your phone. The SOS home automation features use the Z-Wave communication protocol which makes it compatible with most other home automation tech out there right now. They also have an emergency response feature for individuals with limited mobility or other medical conditions.

SOS Security Negatives

While they do divulge their pricing easily enough, they do tend to be misleading in regards to their actual products and services. They are intentionally vague about what comes with each package and what would be considered an add-on.

They also have a lot of reports of having bad customer service. They tend to make their customers jump through a lot of hoops just to get a simple question answered. They also have very limited to no control over your monitoring service which is a completely third party company.

SOS Conclusions

While they don’t provide a bad service as far as their actually security equipment goes, their lack of communication with their third party monitoring service and with their customers makes their service a little undesirable. The third party monitoring service, Rapid Response Monitoring, is highly rated; SOS makes it very difficult to talk to them. So if a problem does occur you might be left to your own devices. Also, make sure you pay close attention to the fine print when signing up for their service.
