Even if your home has never been burglarized, this doesn’t mean it won’t or can’t happen. There are millions of people each year who think their homes are safe from intruders, but because they didn’t have an alarm system, a thief entered and stole precious items. Check out these mind-boggling home security statistics to get a clearer understanding of why you need to invest in a home security system:

  • How often does a burglary occur? There’s a burglary happening right now. One in every 15 seconds.
  • When do most burglaries occur? Broad daylight.
  • The most common point of entry is the front door, so remember to lock it. The next common areas are the back door and a first floor window.
  • The first place burglars look is the master bedroom.
  • $2,230 is the average lost for homeowners. That includes cash, valuables and damages to their property.
  • The typical profile of a burglar is a young male living in your neighborhood looking for quick cash to fund a drug habit. But that has changed in recent years as many young-would-be burglars are opting instead for internet and drug related crimes.
  • An alarm system reduces the chance you’ll get burglarized. See why burglars single you out.

Fortunately, with a home security system, you can greatly deter the likelihood of a burglary taking place, and one of the more notable systems you should consider includes the Vivint Security System, which comes with five alarm options. Here’s a close look at the five alarm options.

Burglar Alarm

A burglary event will trigger your Vivint system if an intruder activates a sensor. Once triggered, the system begins a countdown.

Unless disarmed, the countdown will continue to the end and an alarm will sound. In this event, a monitoring representative will attempt to make contact with you through the panel and request your verbal pass code. If you are unable to be reached, the first and second emergency contact numbers you provided will be called in an attempt to inquire about the incident. If contact is unsuccessful, Vivint will dispatch the local agency to your home and work to notify you of the alarm and dispatch. You will be required to provide your verbal passcode to cancel the dispatch.

The burglary alarm event is the most common alarm category type to generate false alarms. When homeowners forget to disarm the system and then a door sensor is triggered upon entry or exit, the system will begin countdown. Disarming the system will cause the countdown to stop before sounding an alarm.

Panic Alarm

The panic alarm should be used when an out of the ordinary emergency arises, or if needed, in a medical emergency. The panel or a key fob triggers this alarm. The order of action that takes place once the alarm is set in motion is the same as that of a burglary alarm.

Medical Alarm

Only use the medical alarm in a medical emergency. This event differs from a panic alarm in that once the first contact attempt is unsuccessful, a local agency will be dispatched to your home. The Vivint monitoring representative will not call the alternate emergency contact numbers provided by you. This is to ensure swift medical attention is provided. This alarm is triggered by pushing the ‘+’ on the panel and holding down the emergency button for at least two seconds.

Fire Alarm

Both the panel and smoke detectors can trigger a fire alarm. By pressing the ‘+’ on your panel and holding down the fire button for at least two seconds, you are able to send a fire alarm from the panel. However; it is recommended that as soon as a fire is suspected, you should immediately exit the home. The order of action that takes place once the alarm is set in motion is similar to that of a burglary alarm, with the exception of only one alternative emergency contact number being called, and this only takes place if you cannot be reached. Once no contact is made, Vivint will dispatch your local fire department.

Duress Alarm

In the event that you need emergency personnel sent to your residence but do not want to warn an intruder that help is coming, the duress alarm mode will do just that. Your system will have a default duress code and you will use the code to disarm the system. Vivant will respond to this alert with immediate assistance.
