2017 saw an endless string of high profile burglaries of celebrity homes throughout Hollywood, including A-listers like Kim Kardashian and Yasiel Puig. Some of these professional burglars have been caught by authorities, even being filmed on camera. Unfortunately, the home of agency CEO Mauricio Umansky and his wife Kyle Richards was the last to be hit while they were away on vacation for the holidays in Aspen. The break-in wasn’t on a small scale either, with the police report indicating that more than $1 million worth of jewelry and valuables were stolen.

However, there were a few mishaps that could’ve prevented the $1 million heist, especially since the Kyle Richards house was recently purchased in October. Here are some of the mistakes that the Umansky’s made that you could avoid.

Store your valuables or jewelry in a private safe.

Although materialistic possessions can be replaced, the sentiment that is attached to priceless personal items cannot. Umansky’s wedding band and family heirlooms were stolen, and these are treasures that can hold a lot of meaning to loved ones. Place valuables you don’t want to lose in a private safe, preferably outside of your bedroom. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West even plan to store their valuables in private storage away from their home.

Ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your home.

Not everyone has the funds to hire security detail to guard their home, but you can ask your neighbors to keep a watchful eye while you’re away. Having the support of a neighborhood watch can reduce the chances of a break-in, and they can also alert authorities immediately if someone does happen to burglarize your home.

Don’t post on social media when you’re leaving out of town.

Checking in your location on social media to let your friends and family know may be exciting, but can also present a risk for potential burglars. If you really want to show off your vacation, wait until after you return to post your photos and videos.

Install a professionally monitored security system – and schedule to arm it when you’re away.

Due to renovations, Umansky and Richards left their home security system off. However, with smart security on the rise, forgetting to arm your system doesn’t have to be an issue anymore. Most interactive security systems, like the plans at Protect America, allows you to arm or disarm your system via your phone or even voice control. If you’re planning on being away from your home for a long period of time like Umansky and Richards, schedule to arm your system in advance.
