Honeywell’s Smart Home Security System is now on sale at stores such as Lowe’s, Best Buy and Home Depot. It’s also on sale online at Amazon and on Honeywell’s website. The Honeywell Security System starter kit is priced at $450.
The system was first introduced through Indiegogo last November as “Smart Home Security system.” After engaging and reviving feedback from the campaign, the Honeywell Smart Home Security was officially shown at the 2018 CES in January and created plenty of buzz around the systems release.
The Honeywell home security camera comes packed with a 1080p wide-angle HD video camera. Like most other security cameras on the market, it also has night vision capabilities, motion detection, two-way audio capabilities and an impressive 147-degree field of vision.
The camera also offers geofencing and Scheduled Facial Recognition. This feature actually works in two ways: To notify you when someone arrives as expected and to alert of unexpected or unrecognized visitors. If this occurs, you will be sent alerts of the unwanted guest via app. The system can then play audio at 90 decibels to warn off potential intruders.
The Base Station of the camera is the core of the security system. It runs on a 2GHz Snapdragon 8-core processor and has 1GB of RAM and 8GB flash memory. Connectivity support includes dual-band Wi-Fi, BlueTooth 4.2, Z-Wave Plus, and Honeywell’s Wiselink Security Protocol. You can buy Station, which doubles as an Amazon Alexa, as a standalone device for $350.
“The Honeywell unit also responds to an Amazon Alexa command subset,” said Lulu Chang of Digital Trends. “You can ask Alex(a) to control smart home components such as lamps and thermostats, and to set the security system alarms and other features via voice control. You are not limited to Alexa, however, as the Camera Base Station also responds to Google Assistant voice commands.”
If you choose to spend the extra $100, you can purchase the Honeywell Smart Home Security Starter Kit for $450. The Starter Kit includes one camera/Base Station, two door/window sensors and one key fob. You are also able to add additional devices like motion sensors and MotionViewer cameras for a little extra.
The Honeywell Smart Home Security system stores footage for up to 24 hours in the cloud. Honeywell currently offers two storage service options.
- $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year – 1,500 video clips for 30 days.
- $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year – 3,000 video clips for 60 days.
The Honeywell Smart Home Security system seems to offer quite a bit compared to the DIY industry competition. Unfortunately, it is also priced for what if offers. While Ring introduces a new Ring Alarm system for $199 and Nest reduces the Nest Secure price to $299, Honeywell is priced much higher than the competition. Although the Honeywell system offers more, the draw for a DIY system is affordability.
