2012 Uniform Crime Report Shows Increase in Burglary Rates

The Federal Bureau of Investigation released preliminary statistics from its annual Uniform Crime Report, which contained more than a few surprises.

While most forms of crime have decreased, the burglar rate is increased. In fact, the number of burglaries is the only area where crime has increased. Burglaries are up 0.3 percent from the previous year. This slight increase represents thousands of additional burglaries with some areas being more affected than others. Some cities, like Detroit, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio, have seen an increase in burglaries that exceed the national average. When planning for your home security, it’s important to check local crime statistics for your immediate area or zip code.

Murder Rates Increase In Some Areas

Perhaps the most startling revelation from the Preliminary UCR is that murder rates have increased in towns with populations under 10,000. Murders are down in larger cities as violent crimes have been exported to small town America. The FBI didn’t give reasons for the increase in small town violence but some experts think the increase is anomalous.

Crime Rates and Home Security Systems

In total, more than 2,000,000 burglaries happen every year in the United States. Homeowners can defend themselves from burglaries with a security system. Homes with security systems are far less likely to be burglarized. Additional precautions, such as installation of a home video security camera or motion activated lighting, can greatly reduce the risks to your home security.

Other actions can help lower the crime rate in your area. An organized neighborhood watch can help dramatically lower instances of burglary, vandalism, and theft. Members of the neighborhood watch should be trained in spotting crimes and reporting them to police. Many local law enforcement agencies are willing to train neighborhood watch members. This training often forms the basis of a close cooperation between neighborhood watch organizations and the police.
