Installing a home security system is one of the best decisions you can make for your family’s well-being. A home invasion happens every 18 seconds in the US, or just shy of 5,000 per day. And it can happen anywhere, at any time, even when you think you’re the safest.
However, burglars are way less likely to break into a home with a security system installed. One University of Carolina study concludes that 60% of convicted burglars were heavily influenced by the presence of a home security system. Why? Security systems deter robbers because in the event they are able to enter in the first place, alarms will sound and authorities will be notified. Robbers will also be caught on camera. It makes you wonder what the other 40% were thinking!
Okay, you feel educated on security systems now, but the question everyone asks is “How much do security systems cost?” Believe it or not, security systems rarely empty your wallet — many are very affordable. Since not every home and every system are one-size-fits-all, let’s take a look at some variables to consider.
When shopping around for a security system, you should be looking for the best “bang for your buck,” just like anything else you buy. Looking for anything more or less is a recipe for disaster. Also, remember to look for monitored home security systems — not just security cameras or “security camera packages.” Monitored systems ensure that authorities will be alerted and can respond to your break-in, whereas unmonitored systems simply sound an alarm, or send a push notification to your mobile device alerting you that an intrusion has been detected; now it’s up to you to respond, and by that time it could be too late.
When shopping around for a security system, you should be looking for the best product at the best price.
ADT offers monitored home security for $36.99 – $52.99 per month. The lowest price is called the “essential” package, and includes features such as 3 door/window sensors, sirens, motion sensors, and yard signs. The lowest price option does not include two-way voice, cellular alarm monitoring, and something the company calls “ADT Pulse,” which is mobile device remote access to security cameras. The installation cost is extra. As of early 2017, the cost of installation with security cameras was $100 with a new 36-month contract. Termination fees apply.
Vivint is available for as low as $9.17 per month, but that price point comes with a bit of fine print — it requires a 60-month contract commitment, and it’s just the unmonitored “starter” package. At this price point, a system includes only several window/door sensors, a motion detector, and a central control panel — the very basics. If you’re receiving a discount on your homeowner’s insurance as a result, this option could effectively pay for itself. Monitored home security with Vivint is extra, with packages costing between $39.99 to $49.99 per month. The equipment is an extra cost, but you get to choose how much to spend and what to buy.
SimpliSafe takes a different approach — they offer monitored home security by equipment cost and a flat monthly fee of $14.99 per month. Extra features such as fire and water protection are extra. The equipment costs can add up, unsurprisingly. The “Ultimate” equipment package costs about $665, the “Master” package costs about $585, and the “Perimeter Defense” package costs $535. The cheapest package costs $230, but only includes 5 pieces. If you own a small house or condo, this could be enough to fully cover you.
