Burglars aren’t always the smartest people. They are, however, fast. According to recent FBI statistics, the average time a burglar spends once inside a home is under 8 minutes. The average time a burglar spends trying to break into a home is only 60 seconds. If they cannot enter in 60 seconds or less, they usually move on. That’s why it’s absolutely vital that you do everything you can to protect your home from a burglar even entering. Protect America came up with this list of things you should always do to stay safe in your home:

1) Always keep your doors and windows locked and do not open them if someone knocks or rings the doorbell.

This is arguably the most important thing you can do to protect yourself from a burglary. The harder it is to enter your home, the less likely your home will be robbed.

2) Trim any bushes, trees or shrubbery that block your view of outside.

Not only will this make it easier for you to see clearly outside, but it will also prevent burglars from hiding right outside of your home.

3) When the sun starts to fall, close your curtains and blinds and turn on all of your exterior lights.

The last thing you want is for a burglar to see inside of your home and make a mental note of where your valuables are. Closing the curtains and blinds and turning on the exterior lights will prevent anyone from seeing into your home.

4) Make sure your front and back doors have a peephole.

This will make it easy to tell who is at your door when someone knocks or rings the doorbell. If you do not recognize them, do not open the door. Instead, ask them who they are and what they want through the door.

5) Never hide a key to your house outside.

Burglars look for these hiding spots so they can break in without a sound. Instead, give your neighbor or a close friend a key to your home in case you get locked out.

6) Have a reliable home security system and set it before going to sleep and when you leave your home.

This may be just as important as always locking your doors and windows. When a burglar sees that you have an alarm system or hears an alarm upon breaking in, they will almost always leave and move on to another home.

While burglaries still do happen, making sure you stick to these guidelines will heavily deter a burglar from breaking into your home.
