Whether it’s from your car in the driveway or 2 miles from work, walking home alone is inevitable at some point. Unfortunately, no matter how far your walk home is, it can still be dangerous. And this danger is not limited to only women, according to the 2016 FBI statistics; there are just as many men that go missing each year than women. Fortunately, there are a few solutions to this problem. With the technological advancements we have today, there is no reason not to take advantage of the mobile panic button options on your walk home. Here is a list of a few options.
One of the most effective ways of preventing a potential attack is by scaring off the attacking. Although screaming for help is always a good idea, sometimes you may need a little extra help. Thankfully, there are plenty of options for alarming everyone around that there is in fact an emergency. Apps such as the Scream Alarm are particularly useful. In a very simple design, there is only one button to press. If pressed, a woman’s screaming voice is echoed from your phone. In a very similar fashion, a phone case called, Coyote Case, was designed by a father in Memphis with his daughter’s safety in mind. In case of an attack, a built in alarm can be heard over 100 yards away. These sirens will hopefully deter what could be an attack before it actually happens.
If an attack does actually happen, people need to know where you are so help can be sent. With certain safety apps, this is possible. The app bSafe, allows you to add friends to your list of guardians. Once you have guardians added, your location can be sent to them via GPS tracking. Your guardians don’t even have to download the app as your location will be sent to them via text message in case of an emergency. Another app called Companion, behaves in a very similar manner. By assigning trusted individuals as your companions using their contact information, you location can be sent to them so they can track your exact walk home.
No one wants to have to think about preparing for this type of unfortunate event but it’s better to be safe than sorry because these types of attacks do happen.
In 2016, there were 647,435 missing peoples reported in the US. This statistic may go up or down depending on the year but overall, this problem has been around since recorded history. The good thing is this is the first generation of humans to have this advance equipment to prevent these attacks from happening. Take advantage of this opportunity and don’t just become another statistic.
