We have written before about the importance of keeping a secure online presence. So much of our lives is on the internet now, and a breach in our internet security can often mean a breach in our physical security as well. Almost everything you do on the computer and even mobile devices requires some sort of password, PIN, or passphrase to prove your identity. Using a secure, regularly changed, and unique password for every account is important.

However, for most of us, our brains aren’t well equipped for memorizing dozens of long, complicated passwords made up of (ideally) random numbers and letters. This leads us to engage in bad practices like using the same password over and over again for different accounts and opting for simpler passwords rather than longer and complex ones.

The best solution for this is to use a password manager.

What is a password manager?

Password managers make your life more secure and easier at the same time. A password manager stores all of the passwords for your online accounts. Many password managers can also generate highly secure and complicated passwords for you to use (since you won’t have to remember it). These passwords are encrypted and held by your password manager. The one secure password you will need to come up with and remember, however, is the one you use to unlock your password manager.

Having a password manager will prevent you from needing or wanting to use the same password for multiple accounts.

Will my password manager get hacked?

Most password managers use very strong encryption methods to protect your sensitive information. As long as you keep your password for the password manager itself secret and secure, this should not be a concern for you.

Choosing a password manager

Which password manager you use does not matter as much as simply choosing one and going forward with using it. There are a variety of options out there—many with free trials and free versions. Popular password managers include KeePass and LastPass. Feel free to do your own research to find one that suits your budget and needs!

Good luck!
