The smart home, connected home and smart energy markets are becoming a mega boom market. Amazon’s acquisition of home security company, Ring, is just one more news story among many growing interesting threads in this industry. Consumers are interested in two things for smart home tech when it comes to smart thermostats:

  • How can I save money and energy at the same time?
  • How can I have more control over the temperature of each room in the house for maximum efficiency with my smart thermostat?

So that leads to the main question this article begs: What are my options for smart thermostats that have the capability to control multiple zones? There are several, each a bit different but all serving the function of controlling multiple temperature zones with the thermostat inside the home with the use of a smarthphone, tablet or other device (including the thermostat itself). Explore the following options when considering a purchase of a new smart home gadget:

List of Smart Thermostats with Temperature Zone Control

  • Nest
  • Tado
  • Honeywell Evohome
  • British Gas Hive Active Heating
  • Honeywell Lyric T6/T6R
  • Netatmo
  • Loxone Air

The energy of the mind is the essence of life. —Aristotle

Nest is among the most well known of the manufacturers, other than Honeywell. The founders of the company previously worked for Apple Computers. It is known to be a learning thermostat. It uses an algorithm to understand how you use your heating system and then sets a schedule according to that personal behavior it learned. Nest can detect if anyone is home, so it is a very efficient device. It connects via WiFi. It is IFTTT compatible so it can be customized to a great degree (pun intended). Many reviews rank Nest among the best products. There are also wireless nest sensors you can put in other areas of the house to get a more accurate gauge of the temperature in the house.

Honeywell has been known in the heating, energy and thermostat production business for many decades and is a mainstay brand in home and security systems on the market. They developed the well-known round thermostat in the 1950s that many homes still have to this day. Honeywell’s two best entries into the smart home and connected device market for smart thermostats is their Evohome and Lyric T6 products. These products also rank highly but there are other comparable products that offer similar features and let you control heating zones, most notably the Loxone Air System.

Others in the list

Many people prefer Tado’s retrofit system. It is cloud-based. Smart sensors using radiothermostat technology are deployed to allow you to control multiple zones in the home for temperature control.

British Gas Hive Active Heating

In the UK, you can use the Hive app or website to control both gas heat and water options, including setting alerts for when the temperature in your home changes.

This device is compatible with Alexa from Amazon and it also claims to learn your habits like Nest. It will be able to control multiple zones with the release of its smart radiators. It also works with Apple Home.

Loxone Air

Loxone Air systems also have the capability to control multiple zones. It uses a series of radiators as well.
