How Does Apple HomeKit Work?

Apple HomeKit is the tech giant’s home automation platform. It allows users to control specific home devices from their Apple devices, such as iPhones, iPads, and more. These features can be controlled from home, but they also work over the internet from anywhere using both third-party apps and Siri.

What Z-Wave Devices Can I Use with the Apple HomeKit?

Apple has some pretty strict security standards when it comes to connecting devices to HomeKit. This means that not all Z-Wave devices are going to be compatible. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources online to check and see if a device is compatible, such as

Even with Apple’s strict limitations, there are plenty of Z-Wave options to choose from, like:

    • Honeywell Lyric™ T6 Pro Wi-Fi Thermostat
    • Fibaro Flood and Freeze Sensor
    • Fibaro CO Sensor
    • August Smart Lock
    • August Doorbell Cam
    • Fibaro Door/Window Sensor
    • Fibaro Motion Sensor

So with just a little bit of digging, we’re starting to build a pretty dynamic smart home using Apple HomeKit. The important thing is to check and make sure a device is compatible before purchasing equipment.

    HomeKit: Smart Locks

Adding a smart lock to your home is a great security measure. It makes it pretty difficult for any would-be thief to pick a lock when the key is your phone! Plus, if you forget to lock your house while you’re on-the-go it’s as easy as one click on your phone. So what kind of smart locks are compatible with smart lock HomeKit?

    August Smart Lock:

The August Smart Lock is a very sturdy and reliable piece of equipment. With its sleek design, well-engineered mechanics, and magnetic face-plate, locking your home can’t get much better. Yes, the Apple HomeKit setup can be a little tedious and overly-complicated. However, once it’s installed it works great.

Kwikset SmartCode 916 Touchscreen Electronic Deadbolt with Z-Wave:

Sometimes being too reliant on your phone can be a hindrance. If you agree then maybe the Kwikset Touchscreen is a better option for you. It can be set up with 30 different unique user codes which you can keep track of to see who’s been coming and going. One drawback is that it requires the Z-Wave automation network to use all of its features.

    HomeKit: Thermostats

Controlling the air-conditioning in your home is a great way to save money while staying comfortable. So it’s no wonder so many people are switching to smart thermostats. So what’s a good option for Apple HomeKit?

    Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Touchscreen Thermostat:

The Honeywell Thermostat works great with Apple HomeKit and has an easy-to-use control platform. It can also adapt to your using which saves you money and keeps you comfortable.  One drawback however is that it has no option for adding motion sensors.

    HomeKit: Controlling the Features

Great, so you have all of your smart lock HomeKit stuff ready to use.  But what are some way you can control these features? Apple HomeKit lets you categorize features into rooms, zones, and scenes to make it easier to perform common tasks. It also can be controlled with your voice via Siri with commands like “Set up for a party, Siri.”

To accomplish this, you’re going to have to name all of your devices and apply them to its room or zone. The Apple HomeKit also has a scene feature which is a little more complicated than a zone or room. Scenes actually set specific actions to your devices, like dimming the lights or turning on an outlet.

You can also share control of your features with roommates or guests without much difficulty. Simply tap “Invite People” inside of your HomeKit app and enter the person you would like to share’s iCloud address.

Even though Apple uses strict security standards which limit what devices are compatible with smart lock HomeKit, it still has plenty of support and features to satisfy even the most ambitious home geek.  With a little research and effort you can turn any home into a fully automated Apple SmartHome.
