Austin-Based Protect America, Inc. Warns Summer Vacationers of Social Media Sleuths and Common Summertime Burglary Threats

National home security company releases informative “Trouble in Paradise” eBook, campaigns for a safer summer

Austin, Texas -- May 28, 2014 – Protect America, Inc., home security and home automation provider, has released its official recommendations for vacationers leaving their homes this summer. The company cautions summer revelers that burglars target victims during high-travel months and even stalk homeowners to learn their plans.

The security company is concerned with the rise of a social media criminal phenomenon and advises anyone traveling this summer to “beware the overshare”. “This is a real problem,” said Protect America President and Chief Operating Officer Scott Fleming. “We’re seeing cases like these now more than ever. Users have become very comfortable sharing their plans and whereabouts online, and crooks are taking advantage of it.”

Protect America recommends that vacationers exercise extreme caution when posting to social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. There are a multitude of documented cases in which housebreakers have learned their victims’ whereabouts online. The company reminds users to check and double-check privacy settings and to think twice before “checking in”, posting pictures while on vacation or even broadcasting future plans. “It’s not unheard-of to be burglarized by someone you know or are only a few degrees of separation from,” Said Fleming. “Many burglaries are crimes of opportunity.”

Also among Protect America’s tips are maintaining a lived-in appearance at one’s home, never hiding spare keys under door mats and keeping valuables like the coveted flat screen television from easily being seen through windows. A complete list of the company’s summer advice can be found in its newly-released Trouble in Paradise eBook.
