Homeowners Urged to Enjoy Christmas Trees with Fire Safety in Mind

The Round Rock Fire Department and Protect America Partner to Raise Holiday Fire Hazard Awareness.

The Round Rock Fire Department and home security company Protect America are urging central Texans and celebrants everywhere to take simple precautions with Christmas trees to avoid home fires this holiday season. Both organizations aim to prevent Christmas tree fires as they are likely to be extremely severe when they occur.

Revelers are strongly encouraged to keep their trees hydrated by watering every day. Dehydrated trees are a fire hazard and need only seconds of fire exposure to become fully engulfed.

Trees should be kept at least three feet away from fireplaces, space heaters, stoves, candles and other heat sources. In addition, old strands of Christmas lights with worn out cords or loose bulb connections should be replaced.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Christmas tree fires account for an average of over $17 million in direct property damage and seven deaths in the United States every year. The NFPA also reports that the most common causes of Christmas tree fires are close heat sources and electrical problems.

“The Round Rock Fire Department wants everyone to have a safe and joyful holiday season,” Fire Chief David Coatney said. “Taking a few simple steps can help prevent a tragedy from impacting your family or your home.  Keeping your Christmas tree watered, having someone hold a ladder when hanging holiday lights, and being cautious with open flames (candles, fireplaces, etc.) are all easy steps to make your holiday season a real celebration.”

“The holidays are a time for joy and celebration,” said Protect America CEO Scott Fleming. “Home fires during this time can be particularly devastating, which is why we’re determined to prevent them. If key messages with experts like the Round Rock Fire Department can avert even one disaster, we know we’ve done our job.”
