Protect America, Inc. Releases Official Recommendations for Safe Short Term Home Renting During SXSW

Protect America, Inc., home security and automation provider, has released its official recommendations to homeowners providing their spaces for short term rental during Austin’s South by Southwest Festival.

The company advises homeowners use a reputable service to vet potential renters. Established short term rental services commonly use a feedback or rating system to create a picture of renters’ history.

Homeowners with frequent renters should consider installing a digital door lock. These devices eliminate the need for keys (which can be copied) and are easily programmed with a temporary code for each new renter.

Remove jewelry and valuables from the home and lock any non-removable valuables in a safe or dead bolted room.

Notify trusted neighbors of incoming renters so they are not alarmed by unfamiliar faces or vehicles around your home. However, urge them to contact you in case of suspicious behavior.

Lastly, take advantage of your security system’s temporary code capability. Give your renters their own code to ensure your home’s protection in your absence.

“Short term rentals are an excellent way to make some extra income,” said Protect America CEO Scott Fleming. “Proactive security steps go a long way in protecting both property and renters alike.”
